Welcome to Convention Nation’s coverage of NAB Show 2016! This is the second post in our series covering this year’s event held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. If you missed it last week, we posted a NAB Show 2016 Survival Guide with the in’s, out’s and in-betweens of how to make the most of your NAB Show experience.
This week we’re covering some of the mind-blowing technology that the media and entertainment industry uses to bring media to life!
NAB Show 2016 Aerial Robotics and Drone Pavilion:
A featured technology of NAB Show 2016 is the Aerial Robotics and Drone Pavilion. The increased use of drones and aerial robotics has raised the bar for the media industry to create some amazing content. It has allowed producers to create never-before-seen perspectives and unleashed an entirely new field of creativity for shooting different vantage points in production.
NAB Show Flying Cage:
NAB Show gives a nod to the importance of this technology again this year with the Aerial Robotics and Drone Pavilion. The pavilion includes a fully enclosed “flying cage” for an up close demo and exhibition of the technology available.
The Aerial Robotics and Drone Pavilion at #NABShow 2016, includes a super cool “flying cage”!
Try your hand at flying, or just watch the hot shots show off their skills. You can also learn about the aerial technologies available and how to use them from the numerous exhibitors that will be on hand to explain how their products work.
NAB Show Field Workshops:
In addition to the demonstrations in the exhibition hall, there are also opportunities for a hands-on experience in the field using aerial videography. There are Aerial Videography Field Workshops for advanced and beginners. It takes place off-site in the Nevada desert (where you can’t hit anyone with your drone) in the old mining town of Nelson, NV.
This is a great opportunity learn how to fly a drone or fine-tune your flying skills under the expert direction of seasoned drone pilots and top industry videography instructors. Learn how to get that shot you’ve dreamed of and take your videography skills to the next level (pun intended). This is a great way to add aerial production experience to your skillset.

CN Insider Tip: Note that individual passes are required to attend the field workshops.
NAB Show Drone Super Sessions and Education:
If hands-on experience and demos leave you with a thirst for more, you can dive into the details of drones and aerial robotics with the discussion sessions that are scheduled during the convention. The super session called “Drones: Opening New Vistas to Content,” takes place on April 20th and includes discussion and footage from leading FAA approved aerial operators, cinematographers and technologists.
This session is sure to inspire you with some of the most dynamic and innovative drone shots around. It will get your creative juices flowing and your mind plotting your next aerial shot. They also discuss all the need-to-know legal stuff that will keep you out of trouble when operating a drone (unfortunately, you can’t just go flying your drone anywhere you like in the interest of getting the best shot).
The education program surrounding this topic is called “Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (aks “Drones”) for Management, News and Engineering." This informational session dives into the safety and future planning for using drones in broadcasting. As you can imagine, when a big story hits, everyone wants to use their drone to get the best shot. This session discusses the pressure the FAA is under to regulate best practices when using drones in the broadcasting industry.
When a big story hits, everyone wants to use their #drone to get the best shot. Find out how at #NABShow.
